Different Styles of Shiatsu Massage

28 Feb

Shiatsu massage has different variations. It depends on the developer of the technique but it pretty much adheres to the governing principle of shiatsu, which is to apply pressure to the body using the palms and fingers and manipulation of the person’s “ki”.

Jin Shin Do
This shiatsu style was developed by psychotherapist Iona Marsaa Teeguararden and uses gentle yet deep finger pressure on specific acu-points to aid the release of emotional and physical tension. It combines Taostic yogic philosophy, Reichian segmental theory, breathing methods, traditional Japanese acupressure technique and classic Chinese acupuncture theory to help patients enjoy a pleasurable trance that will allow them to get in touch with both their body and emotions.

Nippon Shiatsu
This is the most common type of shiatsu massage which was developed by Tokujiro Namikoshi. It is whole body treatment which can be quite vigorous. It gives emphasis on points rather than meridians and applies knowledge in neuro-muscular points and musculo-skeletal structure of the body as well as the nervous system.

Ohashiatsu
This is developed by Wataru Ohashi and is considered a nurturing method of touch. It centers on communication and synergism of the receiver and the giver as well as the self-development of the giver and the receiver towards a harmonious psychological, physical and psychological being.

Quantum Shiatsu
This is based on the work of Pauline Sasaki. This was developed under the influence of quantum physics, particularly the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Sasaki applied these quantum principles to create a faster and more expansive energy by combining it with knowledge of meridians and charka principles.

Zen Shiatsu
This type of shiatsu massage was developed by Shizuto Masunaga. He was originally a psychologist but soon found him self interested with shiatsu under the training of Namikoshi. He then incorporated the lesson he learned in psychology with shiatsu to produce faster and more effective pain relieving results.

Watsu
This refers to water shiatsu which was made prominent by Harold Dull in the 1980’s. It combines the principle of Zen Shiatsu and the effects of warm water in the body. Apparently, the support given by water to the body takes the weight off the vertebrae. This provides more flexibility to the spine allowing it to experience gradual twists and pulls which will be impossible if done on land.

Healing Shiatsu
This was developed by Sonia Moriceau wherein she incorporated Loving Kindness and Mindfullness Mediation in the traditional shiatsu form.
